How do you use an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator)?

1. Check the victim's consciousness. Gently shake the victim back and forth. Ask loudly and clearly how things are going. Get no response? Then the victim is unconscious.

2. Have bystanders call the emergency number and get a defibrillator. Are you alone? Call the emergency number and put the phone next to you and on speakerphone. Follow the instructions from the emergency room.

3. Check breathing. No (normal) breathing and you are alone? Get a defibrillator, but only when it is DIRECTLY available.

4. Start giving 30 chest compressions. Alternate these with 2 breaths.

5. Use the defibrillator, but make sure CPR is interrupted as briefly as possible. Expose the victim's chest and turn on the defibrillator.

6. Follow the instructions from the defibrillator until the emergency services arrive and indicate that you may stop.
