The logistics sector has a rate of musculoskeletal disorders 50% higher than the na-tional average. With manual handling injuries the second most common injury type suffered in the workplace, and the main cause of MSDs, 16,000 work related cases were reported in 2021. These injury and industry figures make for alarming and worrying reading for logistics, warehousing and transport operations. Manual handling injuries are largely avoidable with the right training in place, but due to time and budget constraints, it's often overlooked. In this session, Alex Samson Director of Systems & Learning Development of RTITB will explore how operations can implement self-paced eLearning to help tackle this issue, as well as how employ-ers can take a more holistic approach, with the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of incident and injury.

How can organisations be more proactive in preventing incidents and better exploit the wealth of routine data generated by projects to support health and safety decision making? First, the better you become, the harder it is to improve further, and secondly, if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got. Applied to data-driven health and safety, organisations want to understand this at a practical level in terms of the different ways in which to exploit routine health and safety data sets. Data and analytical tools are commonly used descriptively to report on past performance, and in essence describe what accidents happened, where they happened, when and who to. But some of the more higher value questions that are relevant to ask in the health and safety space, are less directly informed by the data analysis performed, for example, why did it happen? When might it happen again, and what do we do next if it does?

The old ways aren't always the best ways. They are just the way things have always been done and it's time to make a shift. It is not an easy one. We aren't just talking about technology and equipment, or conducting 'behavioural safety training. The Big Shift is about embracing human factors and optimising how we perform within the whole system and culture. It's about people and how we think and act, our mindset and attitude. We need to make sure you have an environment that is set up to support people to perform at their best, with the capacity to think differently, fail safely and learn fast.

Hazard perception testing has been part of the driver licensing procedure for 20 years, with considerable reductions in collisions attributed to its introduction. Despite this, hazard perception has yet to become a significant part of fleet drivers' continuous professional development. This talk will consider the barriers that have previously prevented hazard perception tests becoming more widespread within fleets, and how these issues can be overcome. Specifically, through the tailoring of training and assessment to the vehicles and roles of commercial drivers, we can create tools that are more relevant and acceptable to our target audience. Beyond hazard perception, similar tests can measure the level of risk that is acceptable to drivers, through our Amber Gambler and Tailgating tests. We demonstrate how these tests can be accessed online through our new EsituDrive platform, or delivered in classroom settings ' which even include the opportunity to view hazard perception clips in a more immersive environment via a virtual reality headset.
