Asbestos is the greatest cause of work-related deaths in Great Britain. Around 5,000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases which typically take decades to develop and cannot be cured. Asbestos was used in many industries and buildings until it was banned in 1999. However, while asbestos continues to be safely removed, much of this material is still in place in buildings built before 2000. This means people who work in older buildings could still be exposed to asbestos fibres today if asbestos is not managed effectively, and is damaged or disturbed.

‘Asbestos: Your Duty’ was launched in January 2024, aiming to improve understanding of what the legal requirement to manage asbestos involves. This presentation covers some of the information and tools that can be obtained from HSE’s website including new templates (including an asbestos management plan template) and explanatory video resources to help anyone who is unsure of their legal duties.

Either way, Data and Data Literacy is an emerging area to which modern, progressive, Safety Leaders should be paying close attention. Whether we’re thinking Bird or Heinrich, or any incarnation of Safety, SHEQ or ESG, the ability to collect, interpret and act upon data has never been more important. Demonstrating the correlation between SHEQ/ESG performance and business outcomes is also crucial for obtaining Board support and budget approval. HSE was set up nearly 50 years ago by the Health and Safety at Work Act to ensure that we return home safe and well at the end of the working day. Key to this success and the reduction in death and injury across Great Britain, has been the approach to managing workplace risk. However, the same can’t be said for work-related ill health. This session explores the challenges around workplace ill health and how these can be overcome to make parity of esteem a reality for everyone.

Sarah will be providing an overview of HSE’s approach to reducing work-related illness and outlining what organisations can do to promote good mental health in the workplace.
