Port Skills and Safety (PSS) and Scottish tech firm COMET, in collaboration, are pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative designed to further improve safety performance and data intelligence that drives better safety and standards across the port industry. This initiative combines COMET’s software and port industry services with PSS’s deep industry expertise and membership to provide practical solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by port operators and their supply chains today.

 

PSS members will benefit from free access to COMET’s Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis platform, a solution designed to bring both rigor and proportionality to managing everything from minor slips and trips to more significant incidents and non-conformances. These incentivised offerings, which also include HSE Culture Assessments and Behavioural Training Programmes, are designed to drive meaningful and lasting improvements in port operations.

 

PSS, the UK’s professional safety and skills membership organisation, represents over 120 ports, services, and training providers. Debbie Cavaldoro PSS CEO , said, “This collaboration with COMET isn’t just about supporting individual ports—it’s about improving the entire industry. By working together and sharing data and insights, we will create a powerful ecosystem of safety and operational excellence. We exist to make ports safer and want the port sector to become one of the safest places to work; this project supports that mission.”

Building on Previous Successes

This initiative builds on the success of a recent collaboration between PSS and COMET that explored the potential of AI in root cause analysis within port operations. In this pilot project, data from a number of port groups —including first responder reports, investigations, and safety observations—was analysed to identify common root causes across the sector. The project highlighted the need for higher-quality data to fully harness AI’s capabilities, and PSS is now working to encourage more ports to take part, and, crucially, to retain more of the data that arises from observations, near misses and incidents so that the true value of computer learning, data analysis, and artificial intelligence can be realised.

As 2024 draws to a close, COMET is celebrating a successful year marked by significant milestones, major client wins, and advancements in our flagship incident investigation software. These achievements highlight our commitment to helping organisations across high-risk industries improve safety, efficiency, and operational performance.

A Year of Innovation and Growth

In 2024, COMET achieved several key milestones that solidify our position as a leader in safety and operational excellence, these are just a few:

1. We had a massive glow up and rebranded from STC INSISO to COMET!

Over the years, STC INSISO has evolved and grown, expanding its offerings and reaching new milestones. However, we realised that our former identity no longer fully captured the essence of who we are today and the focus of the solutions we provide. 1. Global expansion: Partnering with RIMS, a safety consultancy firm in South Korea, COMET extended its international presence, bringing its expertise to more organisations globally.
2. AI-powered innovation: The launch of COMET Companion, an AI chatbot powered by OpenAI, enhanced the user experience by providing live support across COMET’s platform, including Incident Management, RCA, and Supply Chain modules.
3. Launch of our updated incident management module

COMET's incident management module offers a range of key benefits and features designed to streamline incident management processes and drive better outcomes, from configurable design to built-in analytics and optimised follow-up and action tracking, COMET simplifies the process and empowers users to take timely and effective action.

Also, this module now includes our simple but powerful COMET Lite investigation and RCA tools and methodology. At not extra cost.

1. Industry collaborations: Collaborating with Arcadis, COMET contributed to improving Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) risk management solutions.
2. ‘Discovering Safety’ initiative: As part of Safetytech Accelerator, COMET supported advancements in health and safety regulations within the construction sector.

Driving continuous improvement

The year also marked a six-figure growth in turnover for COMET, reflecting the trust placed in its innovative approach to safety. Guided by the philosophy that “prevention is better than protection,” COMET helps clients proactively identify and mitigate risks before they escalate into major incidents.

Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for COMET, with significant developments planned for Q1.

A meeting of minds at a trade association gathering was the impetus behind a collaborative effort from two small companies to drive the future development of recycling for PPE workwear, thanks to bespoke laundry services.

With the support of OnePoll, COBA surveyed 1,000 non-office workers who stand for at least four hours a day to uncover the mental and physical health risks associated with prolonged standing.

These findings shine a light on conditions in manufacturing, retail, hospitality and healthcare, where workers struggle with lower back, foot and knee pain – among other issues.

Rack Collapse Prevention is a UK-based provider of cutting-edge warehouse racking safety systems, specifically engineered to prevent rack collapses. These systems are installed in numerous warehouses and storage facilities across the UK, Europe, Ireland, and globally.

Edinburgh-based occupational risk prevention specialist, Reactec, is continuing the expansion of its distribution network throughout Europe, following an agreement with BaSystemen BV to supply Reactec’s workplace wearable technology across the Benelux region.

Ensuring that items are maintained and cleaned properly can be a time-consuming task for businesses, and incorrect washing and care of the garments can create risk in the workplace.

Has the correct type of workwear been specified? Elis estimates that around 60 per cent of businesses that supply staff workwear may be using some that does not offer adequate protection or is not compliant with legislation. Suppliers can offer advice on choosing the right products for the right application, so it is always worth checking that any workwear items specified meet the required standards for a particular sector. Elis, for example, has in-house PPE expertise and also supplies safety compliant garments for the food industry, as well as workwear for catering and hospitality.
