Examining the link between alcohol and workplace productivity
16 Jan 2025 Ellie Rees – Marketing Communications ManagerWhen we think about alcohol consumption and the workplace, discussions tend to focus on how drinking affects workplace safety, especially in industries such as construction or rail where a lack of alertness can have fatal consequences. However, alcohol intake also has a huge impact on work productivity and, therefore, output. In fact, alcohol awareness charity, Alcohol Change, estimates that lost productivity due to alcohol costs the UK economy more than £7 billion each year. When you also take into account that 17 million sick days are taken each year because of alcohol, it’s easy to see why the cost to the economy is so high.

Joining the company from Ideagen, Paul brings over 30 years of experience in quality and incident management, along with a decade of consultancy and sales expertise across a wide range of industries. His appointment highlights COMET’s commitment to ambitious growth in 2025 and its focus on delivering exceptional value to clients in high-risk sectors.
Reflecting on his career, Paul said, “I started out in quality and incident management, working in manufacturing, electronics, and FMCG sectors as a Quality Manager. I then joined Gael, which later became part of Ideagen, and spent nearly 10 years travelling the world as a consultant. During that time, I worked directly with customers in sectors such as Oil and Gas, Rail, Military, Aviation, Healthcare, Pharma, Construction, and FMCG, helping them develop strategies and get the best out of their solutions. Later, I moved into sales, where my consultative approach ensured customers had a reliable and knowledgeable experience.”
At COMET, Paul will focus on growing software sales and expanding the reach of the company’s flagship solutions. When asked why he joined COMET, Paul said, “I wanted to be part of the leading incident management and risk intelligence organisation. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to help drive its growth and success.”
Paul is also looking forward to working with the experienced COMET team. “What I’m most excited about is being part of the growth and development of both the solutions and the organisation. This is an exciting time to join COMET, and I can’t wait to get started,” he added.

COMET and Port Skills and Safety Launch Initiative to Improve Safety and Data Intelligence in UK Ports
07 Jan 2025Port Skills and Safety (PSS) and Scottish tech firm COMET, in collaboration, are pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative designed to further improve safety performance and data intelligence that drives better safety and standards across the port industry. This initiative combines COMET’s software and port industry services with PSS’s deep industry expertise and membership to provide practical solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by port operators and their supply chains today.
PSS members will benefit from free access to COMET’s Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis platform, a solution designed to bring both rigor and proportionality to managing everything from minor slips and trips to more significant incidents and non-conformances. These incentivised offerings, which also include HSE Culture Assessments and Behavioural Training Programmes, are designed to drive meaningful and lasting improvements in port operations.
PSS, the UK’s professional safety and skills membership organisation, represents over 120 ports, services, and training providers. Debbie Cavaldoro PSS CEO , said, “This collaboration with COMET isn’t just about supporting individual ports—it’s about improving the entire industry. By working together and sharing data and insights, we will create a powerful ecosystem of safety and operational excellence. We exist to make ports safer and want the port sector to become one of the safest places to work; this project supports that mission.”
COMET’s CEO, Mark Rushton, added, “At the heart of this initiative is the opportunity to leverage the volume, quality, and usefulness of the data and insights generated from deploying these solutions. Every product and service in this suite is designed to improve skills, standards, or safety. Importantly, each element creates data that can be transformed into actionable insights, adding significant value to PSS members and help drive the port industry forward.”
Building on Previous Successes
This initiative builds on the success of a recent collaboration between PSS and COMET that explored the potential of AI in root cause analysis within port operations. In this pilot project, data from a number of port groups —including first responder reports, investigations, and safety observations—was analysed to identify common root causes across the sector. The project highlighted the need for higher-quality data to fully harness AI’s capabilities, and PSS is now working to encourage more ports to take part, and, crucially, to retain more of the data that arises from observations, near misses and incidents so that the true value of computer learning, data analysis, and artificial intelligence can be realised.

In 2024, COMET achieved several key milestones that solidify our position as a leader in safety and operational excellence, these are just a few:
- We had a massive glow up and rebranded from STC INSISO to COMET!
Over the years, STC INSISO has evolved and grown, expanding its offerings and reaching new milestones. However, we realised that our former identity no longer fully captured the essence of who we are today and the focus of the solutions we provide. With the transition to COMET, we have a brand aligned to our vision and roadmap for the future. Learn more about our rebrand.
- Global expansion: Partnering with RIMS, a safety consultancy firm in South Korea, COMET extended its international presence, bringing its expertise to more organisations globally.
- AI-powered innovation: The launch of COMET Companion, an AI chatbot powered by OpenAI, enhanced the user experience by providing live support across COMET’s platform, including Incident Management, RCA, and Supply Chain modules.
- Launch of our updated incident management module
COMET's incident management module offers a range of key benefits and features designed to streamline incident management processes and drive better outcomes, from configurable design to built-in analytics and optimised follow-up and action tracking, COMET simplifies the process and empowers users to take timely and effective action.
Also, this module now includes our simple but powerful COMET Lite investigation and RCA tools and methodology. At not extra cost.
- Industry collaborations: Collaborating with Arcadis, COMET contributed to improving Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability (EHS&S) risk management solutions.
- ‘Discovering Safety’ initiative: As part of Safetytech Accelerator, COMET supported advancements in health and safety regulations within the construction sector.
Driving continuous improvement
The year also marked a six-figure growth in turnover for COMET, reflecting the trust placed in its innovative approach to safety. Guided by the philosophy that “prevention is better than protection,” COMET helps clients proactively identify and mitigate risks before they escalate into major incidents.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be an exciting year for COMET, with significant developments planned for Q1.
"We have ambitious plans to further enhance our software and services. Stay tuned for more updates soon!"- Mark Rushton, CEO
